Keri-Anne Payne NSPCC Gherkin Race

British Olympic Swimmer Keri-Anne Payne urges the public to race up the Gherkin for the NSPCC

Step Change – a stair race up London’s most iconic building

British Olympic Swimmer and World Champion of the 10km freestyle, Keri-Anne Payne, and world class mountain runners Ricky Lightfoot and Andy Symonds joined Chris Day of the London Business Group to launch a new fundraising event for the NSPCC and the public are being encouraged to sign up now!

The Step Change Challenge, to be held at, 30 St Mary Axe, aka The Gherkin on Sunday 7 February 2010, will aim to raise a minimum of £125,000 for the charity’s Child’s Voice Appeal.

The NSPCC have been granted exclusive access to London’s most iconic building to host its inaugural Step Change, climbing a thousand steps to raise money raise to help children. Open to corporate teams, NSPCC supporters and the public, the challenge is for teams and individuals to run up 38 flights of stairs to reach the bar at the top and enjoy a glass of well deserved champagne.

Chris Day, from the Advisory Board of Fox-Pitt Kelton Cochran Caronia Waller and member of the London Business Group said, “I’m certain that this event is going to be very popular due to the exclusive access we can provide to the Gherkin. Limited places are available and we’re offering people of all levels of fitness the chance to have a go and help us move one step closer to ending cruelty to children. Please help us by pulling on your trainers, donning your fundraising cap and helping to bring in the pounds for the NSPCC.”

Keri-Anne Payne said, “This event offers an exclusive opportunity to step inside a landmark building and is a fun way of raising money for the NSPCC. I fully support the NSPCC’s Child’s Voice Appeal and would encourage anyone at any level to get running, get fit, and get involved in Step Change.”

For the less adventurous competitors a champagne lift pass is available. Bypass the stair challenge and elevate yourself to the dizzy heights of the champagne bar where you can enjoy a glass of bubbly and savour the views for around 30 minutes before being propelled back down to earth.

Money raised at the event will go towards the £50 million Child’s Voice Appeal, which was launched in September 2008 with the aim of funding the expansion and development of both the ChildLine service and the NSPCC Helpline.
For more information on the Step Change Challenge and details on how to register please visit www.nspcc.org.uk/stepchange or contact the Step Change Team on 0207 650 3426 or stepchange@nspcc.org.uk
